The Faith of Abraham's Servant

This past week I was reading about the servant of Abraham who went seeking a wife for Abraham’s son, Isaac. It impressed me what the Lord said unto Abraham’s servant and the faith the servant had in the Lord. It seemed relatable to how we can build our faith and received blessings from God. Here are some of the parts that impressed me:

The servant followed the commandments of his master and went to the land of Nahor, but then didn’t know what to do. So he prayed, asking God to place in his path the one the Lord had appointed to be Isaac’s wife. “And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rachel came out.” (Genesis 24:15) This teaches the principle that the Lord answers prayers as immediately as He sees necessary. It is powerful to know that when the Lord desires something good for us, he will not delay in responding to our prayers.

The second passage that struck me was: “I being in the way, the Lord led me…” (v.27) The servant put himself “in the way,” by keeping the commandment of Abraham and the promise he had made with him. Because he did so, the Lord was able to guide him to be in the right place at the right time. This teaches the principle that if we keep the commandments and stay on God’s plan for us, he will bring us to success.

This principle is especially hard for me to follow. Even though I know Heavenly Father will take care of me if I just keep His commandments, I let my other goals and priorities get in the way sometimes. Whether it is homework causing me to cut short scripture study, or other distractions occupying my mind so that I forget to pray throughout the day. I can show faith by not letting these things distract me from gospel study and my relationship with Heavenly Father.
